Motivation can be seen from two distinct but related perspectives: Goals – motivation is viewed in terms of desired goals of individuals and this is addressed by the content theories of motivation. Content theories focus on what motivates individuals and assumes that individuals have a set of needs or goals which can be satisfied through work. Thus, they are also referred to as ‘need theories.’   [ 3 ]    Decisions – motivation is viewed in terms of how an individual’s decisions affect their choice of goals. This is known as Process Theories of motivation which view the individual as an active decision-maker and the emphasis is on the actual process (method) of motivation.   [ 4 ]    The following are content theories of motivation: A. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs – Maslow’s theory suggests that individuals have five types of needs, namely (in ascending order):   [ 5 ]    Physiological needs – needs that are essential for living e.g. food, water. Safety needs – people want protection against unemployment, seek comfort, shelter as well as being safeguarde d against unfair treatment. Affiliation needs – people seek attachment and a sense of belongingness and affection at work. Esteem needs – need for recognition, reputation, achievement and strength. Self-actualisation needs – Maslow defines this as â€Å"to realise your full potential and to become all that you can become.† D. McClelland’s theory of needs – McClelland measured people in three dimensions:   [ 6 ]    Need for Power (nPower) – individuals with a high need for power arouse strong emotions in them. They want to create an impact on others and make a difference in life. Need for Achievement (nAch) – individuals prefer tasks that are neither too simple nor extremely difficult but that challenge them to do their best. Need for Affiliation (nAff) – individuals that seek recognition and respect of others and wish to establish personal relationships with others. Herzberg’s 2 factor theory – Herzberg identified two sets of factors:   [ 7 ]    Hygiene factors provide job satisfaction (being content with your job) but not motivation to employees such as pay, supervision, security and working conditions. These are known as extrinsic factors as they are separate from the job itself. Motivator factor provides high levels of satisfaction, motivation and performance. In analyzing the qualities a manager should possess, I will first review two different institutions and their managers to try and draw out the reason why manage ment is an important factor in the success or failure of these programs. A success story One of my initial placements took me to an institution caring for people who needed psychiatric care. On getting to the facility, I was introduced to my supervisor who took his time to introduce me to all members of staff, a situation that helped me feel welcome. I was then handed a set of papers that outlined what was considered best practices in the institution, and was informed that the first item on my itinerary would be to attend a two hour seminar where I would be brought up to speed with the requirements the managers set for all the staff at the institution. I was impressed with the level to which the management went to ensure compliance with the best practice guide, and immediately understood why the institution was ranked among the best in psychiatry care in the country. The manger had set guidelines which he insisted strict adherence to. The seminar was supposed to; Plant a deep workin g knowledge of all issues regarding psychiatry. In this aspect, one was always encouraged to consult with their peers or those senior to them in case they encountered a situation or issue they were not familiar with. Explore how difficulties in communication were manifested in the mentally disabled, and how to make the best out of whatever channels were available to communicate with the patients in an individual level. To educate the staff on consent and capacity issues with respect to people with psychiatric needs and on how best to navigate around the issues Inform the managers and support staff on the resources available to them in the hospital, and on other organizations that offer psychiatric services. The manager was a stickler to detail and insisted on the highest levels of discipline. He led by example in implementing the guidelines on treating people with learning disabilities as equals. So his first major decision is to get Weimen not fired but shift him to the office where he would have been of some use, because losing him could cost the firm potential resources and business in other part of mainland China because the bonus system of the company depended on the overall performance, so that would mean if the influential side of Weimen worked that would also benefit the employees of Beijing.After solving out the problem above the next issue that has to be addressed is the long term issue, that is of how to get into the Textile industry market and according to Yu, World Wide Equipment does not really have any hold or influence in the market situation, the reason why Textile industry was being target was because it was the new industry that was coming up and that too with a good potential, whereas on the contrary the electronic industry did not have any room for growth. Frank Wang was a regional sales manager; joined World Wide Equipment in the year 1995, Wang had been a very impressive sales person and has been a very fast growing employee for the company, after 18 months he was promoted to the senior sales manager and in further 16 months he was promoted to the post of regional sales manager making which made him the first Chinese national to hold a managerial position. Commenting if Wang has been a good sales manager , what we can see in the case study is that he has both pros and cons in his approach to run the Beijing sales team. Wang had created a very effective sales team under him, educating his sales team how to go about their business, It was under his supervision that sales team of Beijing started inching closer to the shanghai sales team. He had helped create two of the promising employees under him Liu Hongyuan and Jiang Li. Wang had another impressive characteristic of being the person who saves the company’s money and he was successful in installing this behaviour in his other employees.When all the other offices would spend money lavishly and bill it on to the company where as Beijing office was a complete contrast of the situation, they would look out for the minimum way possible this feature was instilled by Wang into his employees. Wang what it seemed was a very honest person when it came to recruiting, he would recruit the best out of the lot, his eye for the talent has always been an accurate one. Wang somehow felt that owed his success to Yu that is what made him go against his policy of not recruiting people on the basis of recommendation, but he had to take Weimen in the firm. This somehow showed that he could not stick to his hiring policy and even after repeated failure from Weimen; he could not report his senior to take him off the Beijing office, so yes Wang did have some cons.Overall Wang was a valuable asset to the firm and he was some or the other way a good regional sales manager and he did create some good business for the firm, one bad half yearly result does not prove that he was bad manager, he had the rest of the other years of sales to prove that he has been a success in the Beijing office and had cultivated a great sales team a good environment for them and has made them perform consistently. If put under such circumstances what I would have done is that, taken a few measures in order to shake things a little bit and take it uphill from the recent downfall it has gone through, I would have to make some stern decisions in order to put things back to action. Weimen Situation – Instating Weimen had caused somewhat of a headache to the World Wide Equipment Beijing branch and some or the decision had to be made.If the onus was on me I would go for Weimen’s ba ckground check and with the contacts and influence that his uncle was a very resourceful individual in the city of Guangzhou, so loosing Weimen would mean that losing good business in the city that has always been number three in the list and would be over all bad for the business, so what I would do is shift Weimen to Guangzhou, a city where he would have some influence in the market causing and could bring in a lot of business to the firm and eventually making an overall profit, though still a little bit of training would be required too and a little bit counselling on how to go about the whole situation, but losing him would actually mean that losing somewhat of a potential chance of losing out a chance of enhancing the business in laggard place in like Guangzhou. Textile Industry Entry – The next issue would be of entering the upcoming textile industry and entering the industry in a convincing manner, so what I would do is train the staff in the textile industry or even r ecruits a few people who would have expertise. The chunk of the textile industry is quite big to let go off.Look Into Sales – As the sales have been dipping down, I was a regional sales manager I would actually get into the sales myself and handle the big clients myself and by the senior sales managers who are the cream of the company, because it is the 80 – 20 in every business, which means that 80% of the business comes from the 20% of your clients. Boosting Morale of the Employees – If the onus would be on me I would try and increase the morale of the sales team, because that is a very integral element, without a good morale or state of mind it would not be possible to conduct sales in the best possible manner. Life for the young ladies in Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” Essay

Life for the young ladies in â€Å"Pride and Prejudice† was very different to how life is today in the 21st century. I hope to compare the lives of women living in these times and find if life really was easier in the time of â€Å"Pride and Prejudice†. To decide this I will discuss the aspects of class and the social system, education, entertainment and leisure, transport and marriage that affect these young ladies. In the book â€Å"Pride and Prejudice† there are very obvious class distinctions and strict separations between working classes and upper classes. The strictness of this class separation was such that Darcy felt he would be betraying his family to express his true feelings for Elizabeth Bennet, who he thought to be of a lower class than him. It was not acceptable in the upper classes and aristocracy for someone to have to work for their money. The Bennet ladies were in a difficult position as they were still considered to be high middle class, but did not have enough money to support themselves and to be passed down to them from their father when he died. The Bingley sisters scorned those who worked or â€Å"were in trade†, and those who had no â€Å"worthy connections†. All the characters who appear in â€Å"Pride and Prejudice† seem to be very sure of what they believe their place in the order of society is. Moving around the classes was difficult and unusual because the status was inherited. Today we no longer have these severe class differences, and so who young ladies mix with has much less to do with class, what your connections are or how much money you have. Education is also another major difference between how young ladies live today and how they were living in â€Å"Pride and Prejudice†. When Jane Austen was writing middle and upper class girls were taught to read and write and may have learnt another language, usually French. Young ladies would not have been expected to have any further education but would have been far more highly thought of had they been accomplished in music than they would have been if they were well educated. Caroline Bingley when talking about ladies’ accomplishments says â€Å"A woman must have a thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing, and the modern languages, to deserve the †¦ word†. Even if a young lady wished to get a better education she would have found it very difficult as universities were not open to women and she would not have been able to further a career. Today everyone is entitled to an education and many young ladies go on to have a further education. There are now many more career opportunities for educated women as they are seen equal to men and an educated woman is not thought unusual. Throughout the book the young ladies seem to have a limited amount of entertainment and leisure activities. The Bennet sisters had no entertainment out of the home unless there was a Ball happening in Meryton, and this would only happen when there were officers in the town. Young ladies were not meant to go anywhere public without a chaperone and so this also limited what they could do. The Bennet sisters amused themselves with reading, embroidery and music, having not much else to occupy their time. In the 21st century there are far more things available to entertain young ladies. Much of their time is taken up by education or paid work, neither of which were applied to the ladies in â€Å"Pride and Prejudice†. The range of activities available to spend free time doing has greatly increased and with the amount of transport now available, getting from place to place is no problem. Transport appears to have been quite a problem to the sisters in â€Å"Pride and Prejudice†. Walking was the easiest way to travel, a horse and carriage was used for longer distances. Compared with the transport in the 21st century this was all very slow and moving around the country was a major undertaking. It takes most of two days for Elizabeth to return to Longbourn from Derbyshire after hearing about Lydia and Wickham, â€Å"They travelled as expeditiously as possible; and sleeping one night on the road, reached Longbourn by dinner time next day.† Although we do not know exactly where Longbourn is we know that it would not take that long to complete this journey using todays transport. Almost all the excursions in the book have had to have been planned around transport and how easy the travel is. We would find it strange today for people to have to plan quite short journeys solely on the ease of transport†¦. Communications have also changed considerably. In â€Å"Pride and Prejudice† the only form of communication apart from word of mouth was letter writing. Today we have the telephone, mobile phones, text messaging and e- mails. Most of the views about marriage illustrated in â€Å"Pride and Prejudice† have changed. This is what is said about Charlotte’s views on marriage â€Å"Without thinking highly either of men or of matrimony, marriage had always been her object; it was the only honourable provision for well-educated young women of small fortune, and however uncertain of giving happiness, must be their pleasantest preservative from want.† Marrying for love was an ideal, but not always practical. The ladies in â€Å"Pride and Prejudice† were unable to support themselves, so often had no choice but to marry someone who they may not have loved but was suitable. Elizabeth Bennet, however, is very strong in the view that she will only marry for love, and condemns Charlotte for marrying for money. In the 21st century it seems expected for ladies to marry for love. I think that one of the reasons views on marriage have changed so dramatically from the writing of â€Å"Pride and Prejudice† to 21st century is that women are now able to support themselves. There is no longer much need for a woman to marry a man only for financial reasons as women can now have a carreer and earn equal amounts as men. I do not think that life for the young ladies in â€Å"Pride and Prejudice† was easier than life is in the 21st century, but neither do I think that it is simpler for young ladies living today. I think that aspects of the lives of the Bennet sisters was simpler than that of the lives today, but I also think that in some areas of their lives things were more pressured and difficult. The young ladies in â€Å"Pride and Prejudice† were expected to have very simple aims in their lives, to find a good husband and have a family. Today young women are expected to attain a good education, maybe going onto higher education and start a carreer. They are expected to pursue this carreer and get married then start a family. However, transport and communications in the 21st century are far easier and simpler than those in â€Å"Pride and Prejudice†.

The Newburgh Address essays The Newburgh Address was the result of unrest in 1783 among officers of the American Army due to many officers and men not receiving pay for many years. General George Washington stopped any serious talk by appealing successfully to his officers to support the supremacy of Congress. The officers had been promised a lifetime pension of half pay; instead, Congress gave them five years full pay. I believe that this speech incorporates testimonial, rhetorical questions, and emotional appeal. General Washington makes a very persuasive argument to the soldiers of the American Army which is the reason I chose the topic testimonial. Emotional appeal just for that reason he is appealing to their emotions, though he is a rough military man, he speaks to them as a friend, and he gives them comfort. Finally rhetorical questions, every great argument has at least one rhetorical question, in the case of this one he uses several throughout the Newburgh Address. Why then should we distrust them? And, in consequence of that distrust, adopt measures which may cast a shade over that glory which has been so justly acquired; and tarnish the reputation of an army which is celebrated through all Europe, for its fortitude and patriotism?
